Back pain is a common complaint we hear from many of our clients at Florida Injury & Wellness Center. According to WebMD, 80% of all people will experience back pain at some point in their life. Whether it’s a result of an injury, a sedentary lifestyle, poor posture, or an underlying health condition, back pain can significantly interfere with your daily activities. However, by following some simple do’s and don’ts, you can manage your back pain effectively and prevent further complications.

DO’s of Preventing and Managing Back Pain

Maintain good posture

Whether you’re standing, sitting, or lying down, maintaining good posture is crucial. Always strive to keep your back straight and align your shoulders directly above your hips.

Stay active

Regular low-impact activities like walking, swimming, or cycling can strengthen your back muscles and increase your flexibility, reducing the likelihood of experiencing back pain.

Lift carefully

When lifting heavy objects, bend at your knees, not at your waist, and keep the item close to your body.

Get the right mattress

You spend a third of your life lying in bed, so it’s important to consider your back pain when choosing a mattress. Test out different models (many companies now offer in-home trials for extensive lengths of time) and find the mattress that leaves you waking refreshed and pain-free. (Tip: sleeping on your stomach is terrible for back pain, as it puts extra stress on the spine)

Seek professional help

If your back pain is persistent, seek help from a professional. At Florida Injury & Wellness Center, we provide a range of services like physical therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, and chiropractic care that can alleviate back pain.

DON’Ts

Don’t ignore the pain

Back pain is your body’s way of telling you that something isn’t right. Ignoring it won’t make it go away and can potentially make things worse.

Don’t stay in bed all-day

Although it may seem tempting to lie down when you’re experiencing back pain, too much rest can weaken your back muscles and prolong the pain. Also, always stretch before getting out of bed to loosen up your muscles and prevent injury.

Don’t wear ill-fitting shoes

Uncomfortable, ill-fitting shoes can alter your gait and your body’s center of gravity and put extra stress on your lower back.

Don’t smoke

Smoking reduces blood flow to the lower spine, which can contribute to spinal disc degeneration.
